Random Drug & Alcohol Screening FAQs

First Advantage’s random drug and alcohol screening solution conducts a computer-based random selection from the list of eligible program participants. However, the selected individuals are not notified by First Advantage directly. Instead, when the customer is ready to notify selected participant(s), they are able to download the random screening registration documents and deliver the documents according to their procedures. As always, please consult with your legal counsel to ensure your program is consistent with legal requirements.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) publishes a minimum percentage of safety sensitive employees that must be screened each year, based on the mode of transportation. DOT random screening rates are subject to change and are published annually.

In a genuinely random screening process, some employees may be chosen multiple times, while others might not be selected at all. This happens because after each round, every employee’s name is returned to the pool, giving everyone an equal chance of being picked again in the next selection.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Coast Guard, transportation employees in safety sensitive, regulated positions must enroll in a random drug and alcohol screening program. This requirement extends to full-time employees as well as intermittent or occasional employees as well as leased or independent contractors. To help determine if your company is subject to DOT regulations, click here. Consult with your legal counsel to ensure your program meets legal requirements.
