A Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) reveals the jurisdictions and license numbers of commercial licenses held by the driver across all U.S. states.

Drivers in safety-sensitive positions regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are subject to required screening that includes, but is not limited to, a three-year DOT employment verification report to provide and obtain accident information, driver record search, FMCSA Clearinghouse drug and alcohol report including previous drug and alcohol violations, drug and alcohol screening, and a physical health exam to obtain and renew the Medical Examiner Certificate. For transportation positions that are not regulated by the FMCSA, employers conduct transportation background checks according to their company’s background screening policy.

Yes, employment verifications can be used to verify a driver’s work history. DOT employment verifications are required for drivers hiring into positions regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

For drivers in safety-sensitive positions regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), drug and alcohol screening is required under 49 CFR Part 40. Other drivers may be required to take a drug and/or alcohol test based on the employer’s drug-free workplace policy.
