Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Searches: FAQ*

This is a good practice if a driver has obtained a new license within the past three years. A person can only hold a valid driver’s license in one state at a time. If the driver holds a valid license in one state but receives tickets/violations in another state, those incidents will typically be reported on their current record, depending on state reporting regulations. However, a driver’s previous records are not typically included on a new state’s record. If a driver has obtained a new license within the past three years, consider checking their previous state of residence for records.

A Motor Vehicle Record check typically focuses on a driver’s history related to traffic violations, accidents, and license status. For a view of a driver’s criminal history, a separate First Advantage criminal background check will provide this information.

Yes, a Motor Vehicle Record search will show if the person has an active commercial driver license in the current state. Previously held commercial driver licenses will generally not show. A First Advantage Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) search typically allows you to locate the current and up to three previous commercial driver’s licenses.

The following information can be included in an MVR check: Date of license issue and expiration, current license status, accidents, restrictions, suspensions and revocations, violations and citations, including details and license type (with current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) details and medical certification information, if applicable)Actual information reported may vary by state.
